Elvira Jane Peffer Hickernell, 98, of Meadville and a resident of Hillside Home since 2011, died there, Saturday, May 23, 2015 She was born September 20, 1916 in Natrona Heights, PA a daughter of Roscoe C. and Sara L. Robie Peffer. She married Jack Benner Hickernell May 4, 1940 and he preceded her in death January 5, 2009. She was a 1934 graduate of Har-Brack Union High School, received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1938 from Allegheny College and a Bachelor of Science degree in Secretarial Science in 1940 from Carnegie Institute of Technology. She worked as a secretary at Talon Inc. from 1939-1941, a First National Bank as a teller from 1956-1961 and as office manager/secretary at First Presbyterian Church from 1970-1987. She was very active in the community, where she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, served as an Elder, sang in the choir, was a Sunday School teacher, Circle leader and moderator of the Presbyterian Women. She was a member and Past President of the Meadville Medical Center Auxiliary and participated in every one of its Charity Follies. She was member and Past President of the Literary Club, Past President of the Hillside Home board, member and past board member of Meadville Womans Club and was a member of the Meadville Country Club. She is survived by three children Glenn R. Hickernell and his wife Kathy of Conneautville; Sally J. Overpeck and her husband Andrew of West Jefferson, NC and John R. Hickernell and his wife Mary of Kansas City, MO; nine grandchildren, Todd Overpeck and his wife Julie of Waco, TX, Scott Overpeck and his wife Amber of Houston, TX, Rev. Paul Hickernell and his wife Elise of Troy, OH, Christopher Hickernell and his wife Marjorie of Salem, MA, Sarah Hickernell of Asheville, NC, Kimberly Cole and her husband Aaron of Erie, Brian Hickernell and his wife Missy of Rome, NY, Jon Hickernell and his wife Sheila of Salem, MO and Mark Hickernell and his wife Beate of Grafenwhr, Germany; twenty great grandchildren, Lucas, Aiden, Jackson, Treten, Talon, Bryan, Jessica, Desiree, Jonathan, Jax, Jeremiah, Jacob, Kevin, Daniel, William, Damon, Allison, Ian, Emma and Anna; a brother, John R. Peffer and his wife Margery of Verona, PA and nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by five great grandchildren, Johan and Joseph Hickernell and Amanda Grace, Katelin Joy and Andrew Scott Overpeck and a brother, Chester R. Peffer. The family would like to express their appreciation for the care and concern shown their mother by the Hillside Home staff and the Stephen Ministry Leaders at First Presbyterian Church, especially Nancy Baldwin. Calling hours will be Friday from 6 8 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Inc., 581 Chestnut Street, Meadville. The funeral service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at the First Presbyterian Church, 890 Liberty Street, Meadville with Rev. Dr. Brian K. Jensen, Pastor and Rev. Paul Hickernell, Grandson, officiating. Interment will be in Greendale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 890 Liberty Street, Meadville, PA 16335, The Hillside Home, 535 Williamson Road, Meadville, PA 16335 or a charity of the donors choice.
