Emily R. Boughton

September 13, 1934 — March 8, 2017

On Wednesday, March 8, 2017 the lights went out and the wind carried away the spirit of Emily Richardson Boughton, aged 82 of Meadville, PA. She was born September 13, 1934 in Glendale, OH, a suburb of Cincinnati. She was the daughter of Roland and Althea Ford Richardson. She was a 1952 graduate of Hillsdale High School and a 1956 graduate of Northwestern University with a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education. She worked as a devoted teacher at Meadville Cooperative Pre-School for 29 years, retiring in 2002. "Emmy" as she was known by her friends, was very proud to be a member of the Meadville community which she called home for 65 years. In addition to raising her own family, she touched the lives of generations of children through the Meadville Cooperative Pre-School. Her great belief in early education influenced each of her four children to become teachers. Her passion to stimulate her intellect extended well into her retirement by tackling the daily crossword and challenging jigsaw puzzles. She participated in theater in college and was grateful to share the stage with the cast and crews, many of whom became lifelong friends. Emmy was full of life and fun and always made everyone feel welcome and important. Humor, humility and a deep compassion for all were her primary attributes. She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church since the 1960s and served on the board of the Meadville Public Library and the Meadville Council of the Arts. One of her favorite activities was to volunteer at the Meadville Community Soup Kitchen with members of her UU church family. She helped found the former "Friends of Probationers" under Judge P. Richard Thomas as part of the Crawford County Court Services and was a volunteer with Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). Her lifelong love of the stage and arts made her a popular and beloved participant in both the Meadville Community Theater and Academy Theater productions as well as the Allegheny Jazz Society. Her acting range was showcased in various roles, ranging from Nurse Ratched in "One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest" to Lucy from "Youre a Good Man Charlie Brown". She drew big crowds to many Meadville Medical Center Auxiliary Charity Follies productions due to her ability to make people laugh. Her acting skills were on display beyond the stage as she served as "Miss Tissue" and Grandma Reader at First District Elementary School, bringing laughter to all. Emmy could make even the most mundane thing fun. Emmy had deep ties to the family camp, Treasure Island, in Georgian Bay, Ontario. Founded by her grandmother, Grammie, Emmy instilled the importance and values of family in her children, grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She loved to fish, explore, and dance in the kitchen. She made time for each family member, staying connected and involved she was interested in everything. Emmy recognized the uniqueness in each family member and focused on bringing out the best in all of us. She was the familys rudder and the only person known for eating a whole jar of marshmallow cream in one sitting. Her role models were her parents, Bobo and Gami, and she embodied the best of them. On the last day of her life, she attended her monthly 'HAH' luncheon (Happy and Hatless, a twist on the Red Hat Society) -- a league of extraordinary ladies and some of Emmy's closest friends. She is survived by two sons, David Boughton and his wife Lori of Meadville and William Boughton and his wife Jill of Cincinnati; two daughters, Elizabeth Lohr and her husband Mike of Ashland, VA and Sarah Holt and her husband Max of Meadville; eight grandchildren, Ben, Jenny, Chloe and Cassidy Boughton, Charlie and McAlester Holt and Peter and Sarah Horning; two great grandchildren, Eila and Anderson Horning; a sister, Betsy Kurlin of Glendale, OH; a brother, Ted Richardson of Williamsport, PA and a very special niece, Nancy Kurlin of Glendale, OH. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Althea (Fifi) McCaslin. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, March 12 from 1:00-3:00 pm and 6:00-8:00 pm at the Robert W.
