Emma Gross Gelvin

November 11, 1862 — January 1, 1753

Mrs. Emma Gross Gelvin, World War I county food conservation committee head and former Meadville City Hospital Superintendent, died at her residence in Meadville, last night.  She was 89.

Mrs. Gelvin was appointed by Herbert Hoover, then national food conservation chairman, to head up the Crawford County committee during the first world war.

She had been City Hospital superintendent from 1901 until 1905 when she was married to the late William W. Gelvin.  He died in 1928.  He was one of the founders in 1877 of the Gelvin, Jackson and Starr Insurance Agency.

She was honor student of her 1893 nursing department class at Philadelphia General Hospital, then known as "Old Blockley."  She was presented a medal by the city of Philadelphia for her scholarship and immediately was appointed nurse supervisor at the hospital.  She held the position for five years before appointment as superintendent of the Bridgeport (CN) Hospital.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Susan A. Rinker and a brother, Oscar F. Gross, both of Bethelhem, and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
