Mrs. Esther B. Oakes, 71, wife of A. Bliss Oakes, of Ridgewood, NJ, died Monday, January 13, 1964, at Riverdell Hospital, Oradell, NJ.
Mrs. Oakes was born at Cambridge Springs, September 22, 1892, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Bullock. She was a graduate of Fredonia, NY, State Teachers College and for a number of years taught public schools at Soux City, Iowa and Cleveland. She also served as secretary for the Cleveland YWCA.
Mr. and Mrs. Oakes moved to Ridgewood in 1932 from Shaker Heights, OH. She was president of North Jersey Osteopathic General Hospital Aux. from 1947 to 1957, and was its recording secretary from 1961 until her death. She was a past president of Ridgewood unit of Republican Women; member and former treasurer of the Woman's Club there, and a member and past matron of Ridgewood Order of Eastern Star. She also was a member of Westside Presbyterian Church, Ridgewood, a former deaconess and a past president of the Women's Guild.
Surviving, besides her husband, are three children, Mrs. Richard L. (Caroline) Dunham of Muncie, IN, Mrs. Morgan (Jean) Olcott of Glen Rock, NJ and Harold A. Oakes of Berkley Heights, NJ; two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Shauberger of Liberty, TX and Miss Hazel Bullock of Washington, DC; a brother, P. Preston Bullock of Arcadia, CA; ten grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
