Esther V. Hoge, 84, formerly of Vernon Township and a resident of Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community, died there Monday, December 31, 2001 following a period of declining health.
She was born May 12, 1917 in McKeesport, a daughter of the late John and Lydia Gacey Maser. She married Harry R. Hoge July 2, 1948 and he preceded her in death August 29, 1996.
She attended the former Slippery Rock State Teachers College and graduated from Penn State University with a Bachelor of Science in Education. She worked as an elementary school teacher in the McKeesport school system for 9 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church and its choir and women’s missionary society. She was also a member of the Vernon Grange and the Watson Run Women’s Club.
Survivors include 3 brothers, Albert Maser of Texas, Edward Maser of McKeesport, and Frank Maser of Williamsville, NY; and several nieces and nephews including Rachel and Gerald Hicknernell and Brian and Jean Weber all of Meadville who were her caregivers in recent years. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Genelle Hoge; 2 brothers, Alex and John Maser; and 3 sisters, Margaret Weber, Agnes Van Vliet, and Lydia Williams.
Calling hours will be Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville. The funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. with Rev. Gregory Streed, Pastor of First Baptist Church officiating.
Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
