Ethel E. Ewing, Ph.D., 94, a resident of Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community, died Sunday, July 30, 2000 at her residence.
She was born June 2, 1906 in Corry, a daughter of the late Thomas R. and Grace J. Mason Ewing.
Dr. Ewing was a 1924 graduate of Corry Area High School and 1928 graduate of Muskingham College. She began her teaching career in 1928 as a teacher at Boardman High School, Boardman, OH. She completed her Masters degree at Radcliffe College and resided and studied in Tokyo, Japan, and solo traveled in the 1930s through Asia, India, Egypt, the Middle East and later Europe. She completed her Doctor of Philosophy degree at Cornell University. She retired in 1971, a Professor at California State University, Long Beach, CA for 20 years where she had also served as chairperson of the Department of Anthropology and gave courses in cultural Anthropology. She previously had been on the faculty of the University of Washington, Seattle and New York State College, Albany. She was the author of a textbook, "Our Widening World: History of the World's Peoples" punlished in 1958 and widely used in high schools in the US including in Corry for many years.
Dr. Ewing was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and a Fellow of the American Anthropology Assn. Locally, she was active in Delta Kappa Gamma, a society of Women leaders in education, the Crawford County Historical Society, the Colonel Crawford Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Meadville Womens Club.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a brother, Orlo A. Ewing of Corry and eight nieces and nephews, Carol Diess, James N. Ewing, Barbara J. Ewing and Fred T. Ewing, all of Meadville, Dr. Jane E. Wood of Corry, Bruce B. Ewing of Cuba, IL, Thomas B. Ewing of Lewistown, IL and Lee B. Ewing of Washington DC.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Marie Ewing and three brothers, Donald H. Ewing, Raymond J. Ewing and Fred L. Ewing, M.D.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
