Eugene Green, 87, of Guys Mills, died Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at Meadville Medical Center.
He was born January 31, 1926 in Portsmouth, Ohio, a son of Eugene and Olive Arthur Greene. He married Willodean Burriss in 1954 and she survives.
Eugene was a 1944 graduate of Portsmouth East High School and was a Veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of the 29th Marine intelligence section and participated in the Okinawa campaign. Following this campaign, he returned to officer candidate school until his honorable discharge shortly after World War II ended.
Eugene joined Ohio Consolidated Telephone Company as an accountant in 1947 and became assistant auditor in 1951. In 1956 he joined Home Telephone Company of Ridgway as an auditor and was named commercial manager in 1962. In 1967, Eugene was named president of Western Ohio Telephone Company, Kenton, Ohio. He became vice president and district manager of Mid Penn Telephone Company, Meadville in 1969 and subsequently was named regional service manager in 1981 for the state of Pennsylvania. In 1985 he was named president of Alltel PA until his retirement in 1988.
Eugene was a former member of Stone United Methodist Church and the Rotary and Lions Clubs of Meadville. He enjoyed wintering in Myrtle Beach, SC for the past 25 years, was an avid reader, enjoyed working on his computer and watching western movies, and was a devoted fan of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team. He mostly loved his family as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and will be deeply missed.
Survivors, in addition to his loving wife Willodean of 59 years, include a son, Jeffrey Greene and his wife Vicki of Carmichaels; a daughter, Lisa Greene of Meadville; five grandchildren, Andrew Greene and his wife Jennifer of Canonsburg, Jessica Roszak and her husband Steve of Washington, PA, Kelly Rogers and Robert Recker of Canonsburg, Kyle Rogers of Meadville, and Jesse Stewart of Meadville; three great-grandchildren, Jackson Greene, Addison Greene, and Edyn Recker; a sister, Carol Cole of Columbus, OH; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Services will be held privately at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville with the Rev. Dave Brumagin officiating.
Interment will be in Blooming Valley Cemetery.
