Euphemia R. Haxton

May 12, 1854 — January 1, 1753

Miss Euphemia R. Haxton, teacher in Meadville city schools for over a half century and principle of the high school for more than a score of years, died late last night at her home.

The veteran educator, who reached her 90th birthday anniversary on May 12, had been almost bedfast since last January when she fell and fractured her hip.  She had been a patient at City Hospital for some time but a few weeks ago was removed to her home.

Miss Haxton's long service in city schools was temporarily interrupted in 1920 when she resigned from position as Meadville High School principle.  Only a short time later, however, the school board requested she return to the post to guide the school through conversion period while the new high school at the present location was being constructed.  She had been with the city schools for 53 years when she finally retired.

She was born at Pickering, Canada.  Only a few years later, her family moved to Meadville.  in 1871, she graduated from the Meadville Academy.

A sister with whom she had made her home for several years, Mrs. Katherine V. Culbertson, died several weeks ago.  Three sisters survive, Mrs. Ralph Simcox of Sewickley, Mrs. Clement Carew and Miss Beatrice Haxton, both of Beaver.  She also leaves a number of nieces and nephews.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
