Evelyn A. Hedden

September 9, 1907 — October 15, 2006

Evelyn A. Hedden, 99, of 974 Leslie Rd., Meadville, died Sunday, October 15, 2006 at her residence.

She was born in Portville, NY September 9, 1907, a daughter of the late Earl and Rose Chaffee Holcomb.  She married Harold D. Hedden June 30, 1931 and he preceded her in death in 1986.

She was a 1925 graduate of Portville High School, a 1929 graduate of Geneseo Normal School, Geneseo, NY, and 1957 graduate of Edinboro State Normal School with a Bachelor of Science degree in education.  She was an elementary school teacher in the Meadville public schools for over 20 years and previously taught in New York.  She was a former volunteer at Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community and with meals on wheels.  She enjoyed gardening, reading, baking, and letter writing.  She was especially passionate about teaching where she loved her students dearly and was equally loved by them.

She was a longtime member of Grace United Methodist Church where she was formerly very active.

Survivors include a son, John C. Hedden and his fiancée Judy A. Britton of Meadville; a grandson, Brian Hedden of Bridgeport, CT; a great-grandson, Kodiak Hedden; a sister, Mabel Johnson of Chelsea, MI; and nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.  In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Louisa Bailey and a brother, Harold W. Holcomb.

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville.

A funeral service will be Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Sarah Roncolato, Pastor of Grace United Methodist Church officiating.

Interment will be in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Portville, NY.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Crawford County, 448 Pine St., Meadville, PA 16335, Meadville Public Library, 848 N. Main St., Meadville, PA 16335, or photographs of Evelyn may be presented to the family.
