Francis S. Peters, 76, was died on arrival at City Hospital on Friday, February 25, 1972, after an apparent heart attack at his home.
He was born at Meadville on November 3, 1895, a son of Emery and Ida Schlosser Peters. He married Dorothy L. Wiard on May 29, 1923, at Springboro. He retired from the Erie Lackawanna Railway Co. in 1970 after being employed there for 53 years. He went to work at the Erie Railroad on February 12, 1912, as a machinist apprentice.
He then attended Edinboro Normal School, now Edinboro State College, graduating in 1917. Mr. Peters then returned to the railroad as a draftsman in offices in the Flood Building on October 1, 1917. He was called into military service in 1918 and returned to the Erie's drafting department in 1919. He worked for a short while for Phoenix Iron Works in 1921 and then returned to the railroad in 1922 as a layout man. He held this position for 27 years.
His last several years at the railroad were as a diesel roller bearing mechanic. Mr. Peters was active in the Meadville Area War Veterans Council and was a past commander of Charles N. Stafford Post 111, American Legion. He also belonged to the Erie Lackawanna Veterans Assn., Dick Hose VFD, Cussewago IOOF Lodge, National Rifle Assn., Crawford County Historical Society and Stone United Methodist Church. He played baritone horn in the one-time Meadville IOOF Band and instructed the American Legion Post 111 Drum Corps and also organized and trained a Junior VFW Drum Corps.
Survivors include his widow; a son, Glenn E. Peters of Meadville and a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Mitylene) Becker of Oklahoma City, OK.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Roselawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
