Frank T. Humes, 83, of Blooming Valley, passed away Monday, March 31, 2014 at Meadville Medical Center.
He was born December 4, 1930 in Saegertown, a son of Fred and Saloma Theuret Humes. He married Shirley Smith August 12, 1953 and she survives.
Frank worked as a union carpenter and was a member of union local #556. He subsequently worked for Devore Construction Company for over 10 years. In his earlier years, Frank was self-employed in truck hauling of milk and coal and he also worked for the Cliff Nageotte Roofing Company. He was also the caretaker of Blooming Valley Cemetery for many years.
He was a member of Blooming Valley United Methodist Church and a social member of the Saegertown American Legion Post 205. He was a former member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006, Meadville Eagles Aerie 429, Meadville Elks Lodge 219, and the Blooming Valley Volunteer Fire Dept.
A hard worker, Frank and his wife Shirley enjoyed farming on the side for 20 years, buying homes, remodeling them, and then reselling them, and they had a love of horses and enjoyed breeding them. Additionally, Frank enjoyed gardening, hunting, camping, dancing, and socializing.
Survivors, in addition to his loving wife Shirley of 60 years, include three daughters, Terry L. Reichel and her husband Charles of Homer City, Nancy A. Armstrong and her husband Larry of Guys Mills, and Laura L. Dengler and her companion Robert Kent of Saegertown; three sisters, Katherine Melvin of Cambridge Springs, Ida Edge of Blooming Valley, and Lela Nageotte of Meadville; six grandchildren, Joseph Reichel, Dundy Petrus, Courtney Avey, Justin (Frankie) Reichel, Melissa Dengler-Smock, and Alicia Staats; four step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, David Avey, Skye Bugay, Dylan Bugay, Cameron Staats, Addison Smock, and Cale Staats; five step-great-grandchildren; a special former son-in-law, Ray Blystone of Cambridge Springs; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Merle Humes, Harold Humes, and Carl Smith; a sister, Mattie Briggs; and a granddaughter-in-law, Angela Reichel.
Calling hours will be Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville and Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. at Blooming Valley United Methodist Church, 24740 State St., Meadville.
The funeral service will be Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Blooming Valley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joong Wook Koe, Pastor, officiating.
