Dr. Frederick Marantz, 65, of Meadville, was pronounced dead on arrival at City Hospital Friday, February 13, 1981.
He was born in New York City March 21, 1915, a son of James and Sophia Jelline Marantz. He married Lucille Mennen.
Dr. Marantz retired in June 1980 as associate professor emeritus of music at Allegheny College. He had served on the faculty since 1971. He received undergraduate and graduate degrees from Columbia University. Before coming to Allegheny College, he had taught at Franklin Pierce, Keene State, Goddard, St. Michael's and Middlebury colleges.
He was active as a solo pianist, having given recitals in New York City at Carnegie Recital Hall, Town Hall, Times Hall, Kosciuszko Hall and Donnell Hall.
He appeared annually as soloist at Allegheny College and had appeared at other colleges and universities in western PA. He was a staff member of several summer music festivals including Allegheny Colllege Summer Music Festival.
He frequently performed in duo piano recitals with his wife, Lucille, having completed a tour with her in the spring of 1980. He also had performed at National Art Gallery in Washington DC.
He was a member of the Unitarian Church of Meadville, and formerly was active in Meadville Jewish Community Center.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Robin) Holland of Emerson, NJ and Ms. Sonia Marantz of New York City and three grandchildren.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
