Frederick William "Bill" Dowd

January 11, 1933 — March 11, 2019

Frederick William “Bill” Dowd, age 86, of Stoneboro, PA, passed peacefully into the arms of his Savior on Monday, March 11, 2019. Born Jan. 11, 1933, at Ellery, New York, he was the son of the late Charles and Elsie (Bumford) Dowd. Bill grew up in Bemus Point, NY, and later moved to Texas and California. He was married to the former Mary Dowling from July of 1976 to the time of her passing in Oct. 1996, after which Bill moved to Pennsylvania. Bill was a hard working man, who had held many jobs, mostly in the construction trades. He was multi-talented, resourceful, and loved building and crafting things from scratch, often resorting to MacGyver-like techniques to accomplish his purposes. For the past several years he owned and operated “Bill’s Home Repair,” working and doing odd jobs up until just days prior to his passing. Of all the jobs he had, the one of which he was most proud was his service to the Lord at Emmanuel Christian Church, Stoneboro. He was a man who was exceedingly grateful for having been given a “second chance” at life and just wanted to give something back. A true “rambling man” at heart, Bill loved traveling and seeing the country, especially by train. At age 84 he drove by himself to Alaska and back in his 2004 pickup truck. He had a quick wit and sense of humor, always ready with a story or joke, and those closest to him were often the recipients of his practical jokes. He will be sadly missed by those who were fortunate enough to have gotten to know him. Bill is survived by his step-children: Michael (Brenda) Dowling, Patrick (Denise) Dowling, Robert (Patty) Dowling, and Kathleen Rogers all of Texas; and Timothy (Sonia) Dowling of Sabattus, Maine; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his niece Marsha Huffman of Olmsted Falls, OH; his special friend and “adopted daughter” Lee (Clair) Turner, of Hadley, PA; his faithful companion “Katie”; his daughter Diane McCandless of Cambridge Springs, PA; and his Emmanuel Christian Church family, Stoneboro, PA. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, his parents, his siblings Harold, Jimmy, and Florence (Dowd) Huffman, and his faithful companion “Little Bit.” A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held at Emmanuel Christian Church, Stoneboro, PA, at a later time convenient to the family. Funeral Arrangements have been entrusted to Black Funeral Homes, Stoneboro & Sandy Lake. Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.BlackFuneralHomes.net
