Gary Joseph Mercier, 69, of Saegertown, passed away December 29, 2020 from complications of Covid-19 at the Crawford County Care Center where he resided for the past few years.
He was born on May 27, 1951, the eldest child of the late Victor and Jeanne Mercier of Saegertown. He was a 1969 graduate of Saegertown Area High School where he played football under coach Merle Darcangelo. He also played in the then local rock band “The Plague”.
Gary worked at various jobs including Channellock, Kerr’s Jewelry, bartending, hotel maintenance and lastly as a Merchant Marine both domestically on the Great Lakes and internationally, traveling the world’s oceans until 1991. He enjoyed golfing, swimming at the YMCA and playing chess at CHAPS. Gary had a stroke in 1991 which left him partially paralyzed and without speech. He continued to prevail and maintain a positive attitude until his failing health and passing.
Gary was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his daughter, Aimée Mercier Farley (Kevin) of Fairfield, Iowa; his son, Gary Keeley and grandchildren, Kensley Keeley and Corrie Keeley all of Ft. Collins, Colorado; his former wife, Nancy Kerr Walker of Santa Fe, New Mexico; three sisters, Michelle Mercier of Denver, North Carolina, Jeanne Mercier of Conneaut Lake and Rita Mercier Getchell (Warren) of Cochranton; his nephew, Adin Hamilton (Ashlea), nieces, Laina Hamilton Aquiline (Matt) and Gretta Hamilton Meeker (Nick), all of the Pittsburgh area.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of the Crawford County Care Center for their excellent care and love that was provided to Gary.
Due to the Covid-19, there will be no calling hours. A private memorial service will be held by the family. Arrangements have been entrusted to Robert W. Waid Funeral Home Inc., 581 Chestnut Street, Meadville where memories and condolences may be shared at www.waidfuneralhome.net.
