Gary L. Walters, Sr., 69, of Meadville (Union Township), passed away Thursday, September 15, 2016 at UPMC Hamot surrounded by his loving family from complications of pulmonary fibrosis.
He was born September 3, 1947 in Kittanning, a son of the late Edward A. and Mary E. Scott Walters. He married Betty A. Jackson December 6, 1969 and she survives.
Gary was a 1966 graduate of Kittanning High School. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1969. He worked at Avtex and subsequently at PPG as a line operator for 38 years, retiring in 2007.
Gary was a member of the Presbyterian Church of the Redeemer and was a former deacon. He was a life-member of Vernon Central Hose Co. where he was the former fire police captain. He was a member of the Charles Stafford American Legion Post 111, was a member and former treasurer of the PA fire police, and was a former Crawford County constable.
Gary had been active with the Boys Scouts where he served as coordinator for Troop 223. He was the former treasurer of the Second District School PTO, coached his children’s softball and baseball teams, provided tornado presentations to area schools, played Santa Claus at area schools and day cares, and was active in the stroke support group at Meadville Medical Center.
Gary enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, mowing his grass, was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan, and loved singing and especially loved his family and spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors, in addition to his loving wife Betty of almost 47 years, include a daughter, LeeAnn Piorkowski and her husband Michael of Meadville; a son, Gary L. Walters, Jr. and his wife Stephanie of Meadville; four grandchildren, Aarick and Aarynn Myers, Ashley Merritt, and Brittany Walters; a great-grandson, Raymond Malliard; three brothers, Edward A. Walters and his wife Diane of Kittanning, Richard Walters and his wife Kathy of Kittanning, and Barry Dean Walters, Sr. and his wife Cindy of Jeannette; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at WAID-COLEMAN FUNERAL HOME, 12422 CONNEAUT LAKE RD., CONNEAUT LAKE.
The funeral service will be Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Edward A. Walters, brother and the Rev. Rachel Johns, Pastor of the Presbyterian Church of the Redeemer, officiating.
Interment will be in Greendale Cemetery with military honors provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006, Meadville.
