Gene Gaylord Rumsey

June 14, 1932 — November 21, 2015

Gene Gaylord Rumsey, 83, of Meadville passed away Saturday, November 21, 2015 at Saint Vincent Hospital, Erie.

He was born June 14, 1932 in Greenville a son of Alberta Rumsey Stockton.  He married Jean Boyd May 24, 1952 and she survives.

He graduated from Conneautville High School in 1950 and then joined the U.S. Air Force  and was stationed at Carswell Air Force base in Fort Worth, TX.  Following his discharge in November 1953, he enrolled at Edinboro University graduating in December 1957 with a bachelors degree in Art.

He taught at Randolph-East Mead High School where he also started the football program and was basketball coach until June 1969.  He was then a sales representative for C & J Industries and subsequently for Erie Plastek Group in Erie.  He served on the Crawford Central School Board for 11 years, with 9 years as President and was a Crawford County Commissioner for 4 years.  Semi-retired, he ran Conneaut Lake Park for several years.  He also enjoyed playing lots of golf with his buddies.  He had a small promotional products business with his two friends, Ron Shea and Frank Smith.  He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Survivors, in addition to his wife Jean of 63 years, include: two daughters, Tracy Hay and her husband John of Baltimore, MD and Lisa Biebel and her husband Terry of Phoenix, AZ; a son, Mark Rumsey of Philadelphia; a sister, Wanda Loughner of Rundelltown and seven grandchildren, Tara and Trey Miller, Ariel and Austin Hay and Samantha, Sydney and Connor Rumsey.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Inc., 581 Chestnut Street, Meadville.

The funeral service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Rebecca Patterson, Pastor of Grace United Methodist Church, officiating.

Interment with military honor provided by Huidekoper VFW Post #2006 will be in Union Cemetery, Guys Mills.

The family suggests memorials be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 828 N. Main Street, Spcial Olympics of Crawford County, 222 Chestnut Street both of Meadville, PA 16335 or the American Heart Association, 823 Filmore Avenue, Erie, PA 16505.
