Gene M. Hammitt, 71, of Martha Drive, Meadville died Friday, September 23, 2005 at Good Samaritan Hospice House, Wexford.
He was born June 29, 1934 in Windber, PA a son of Russell and Minnie Lynn Hammitt. He married Elizabeth A. Dyer July 26, 1958 and she survives.
He retired in 1994 as Professor and Chairman of the Spanish Department at Allegheny College after 35 years of service. He earned is Bachelor of Arts degree from Grove City College, his Masters degree from Penn State University and his Doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh. Additionally he studied at Ohio State University, the University of Mexico in Mexico City and the University of Madrid, Madrid, Spain.
He was a member of Stone United Methodist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife Elizabeth of 47 years, include: one daughter, Debbie Little of Seven Fields, PA and two granddaughters, Caitlin Marie Little and Courtney Nichole Little.
Calling hours will be Sunday from 4-6 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Inc., 581 Chestnut Street, Meadville, PA.
The funeral service will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Stone United Methodist Church, 956 S. Main Street, Meadville with the Rev. William L. Brown, Assoc. Pastor, officiating.
Burial will be in Greendale Cemetery.
