George Darwin Knox

January 16, 1921 — August 8, 1997

George Darwin Knox, 76, of Meadville, died Friday, August 8, 1997 at Meadville Medical Center.

He was born January 16, 1921 in Meadville, a son of the late Allan J. and Irene Edith Polder Knox.  He married Jeanne Marie Bowen June 14, 1941.  She survives.

Mr. Knox was a 1939 graduate of Meadville High School.  He was a veteran of the US Navy in WWII.  He served from 1943 to 1945 aboard the USS Halsey-Powell in the Pacific Theater of Operations.  He was employed as a window clerk with the US Postal Service for 25 years volunteer and scout master with both the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts which included a trip to the Philmont Scout Camp in New Mexico.  He also volunteered with the Girl Scouts and was a member of the American Legion Post 111.

He was a member of United Presbyterian Church of the Redeemer.

Survivors in addition to his wife, include two sons, Richard B. Knox of Meadville and Gary A. Knox of Guys Mills; two daughters, Judy L. Laird and Cheryl I. Knox, both of Meadville; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.

Services were held with the Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
