George Grauel Wasser

November 18, 1923 — April 21, 2018

George Grauel Wasser, 94, of Greenville, passed away Saturday, April 21, 2018.

He was a true native son of Greenville.  He was born November 18, 1923 to Helen Grauel Wasser and Ray Wasser and was a lifelong resident of Greenville.  He was raised and lived a good Christian and was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church.  He attended the old Columbia School and graduated from Penn High School in 1941.  After high school, he attended Thiel College until it was his time to serve his country in the United States Navy.  He served in the Pacific as a corpsman and, as was normal for his generation, didn’t speak much of his experiences in the war.  When the war was over, he returned home and graduated from Thiel in 1948.  While at Thiel he met the love of his life, JoAnn Dent.  They married in 1949 and raised three children at their home on East Avenue.  They were married 55 years before she passed away in 2004.

George was civic minded and served in that capacity in many ways.  He served on numerous boards and belonged to several civic clubs.  Most importantly was his service to the town of Greenville.  He served on the town council and eventually became mayor, a position he held from 1965 to 1978.  He was also a downtown businessman.  He owned and operated Wasser’s Men’s Wear, a family run clothing store, a business he took over from his father.  The business served our community for 63 years before closing in 1991.

After retiring, he was able to spend more time pursuing his lifelong passions, golf and fishing.  He would spend hours trying to perfect those arts and he had a great time doing so.

He is survived by his three children, Sue Beatty (Marshall) of Conneaut Lake, George (Susan) of Stevensville, MT, and Ray of Granite Falls, N.C. as well as seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Friday May 4th at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 323 Main St., Greenville.  In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the First Presbyterian Church, 323 Main St. or St. Paul’s Home, 339 E. Jamestown Rd., both of Greenville, PA 16125.
