George H. Nelson, 82, of S. Mosiertown Road, Meadville, died Wed., April 30, 2003 at the Transitional Care Unit of Meadville Medical Center.
He was born in Racine, Wisc. March 17, 1921, a son of the late George & Louise Schrader Nelson. He married Jane Carman Aug. 31, 1946 and she survives.
He was a graduate of Western Reserve Univ., Cleveland with a degree in Business Administration. He retired in 1982 as a Process Supervisor with Avtex after 42 year of service.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he had served as a deacon and an elder. He was a veteran of World War II with the rank of Sgt. in the U. S. Army, having served in the European Theatre of operations. He enjoyed camping, hunting, and archery, having served as treasurer of the Meadville Field Archers. He also raised beef cattle and horses on his farm in Hayfield Twp.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of 56 years, include 3 daughters, Anne Elizabeth Shuttleworth and her husband Allen of Meadville; Donna M. Nelson, M.D. of Antonito, CO; Joan K. Nelson of Concord, NH; 1 son, Eric J. Nelson of Pennacook, NH; 2 grandchildren, Jacob Hall and Kimberly Shay; 3 step-grandsons, Greg, Adam and Matt Shuttleworth; and 3 great-grand-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 1 brother, Clyde Nelson and 1 sister Jeannette Culbertson Sachs.
Calling hours will be Friday from 10 a.m. to noon in the Chapel of First Presbyterian Church, 890 Liberty St., Meadville where funeral services will be held at noon with the Rev. Drew Elling, Associate Pastor officiating.
Burial will be in Greendale Cemetery with full military honors provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Harm Jan Huidekoper Post #2006, Meadville.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 890 Liberty St., Meadville, PA 16335.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville.
