George L. Maxwell, 75, of Meadville, died in his sleep last night.
He served a record setting 24-years on Meadville City Council and was an employee at Talon, Inc.
In addition to his long service as councilman from 1916 to 1954, George had served in other fields of public service. He had been a member of the Meadville Board of Health for four years before his first election to council and later served two years as member of Republican State Committee from Crawford County.
George was born in Meadville, July 7, 1879, attended public schools and Meadville Commercial College. He was employed for 27 years by the Keystone View Co., including a number of years as superintendent of manufacturing and shipping. He entered the retail furniture business as partner with Weller R. Blanchard in the firm of Maxwell & Blanchard which operated a large store on Water Street north of Chestnut for about nine years.
He joined Talon, Inc., as an employee of the shipping department in August 1943, and had worked for more than 11 years as a foreman in that department.
He was a member of Stone Methodist Church.
Surviving are the widow Mrs. Mabel Maxwell; a sister, Mrs. Minerva Flick of Meadville; a brother, G. Stanley Maxwell of Meadville; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Mary Shellito of Westminster, MD and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
