George Loshbaugh Muir

April 12, 1881 — August 14, 1960

George Loshbaugh Muir, 79, of Meadville, long assocaited with the old Mead-Penn Iron Works, died suddenly Sunday, August 14, 1960, at his home of a coronary occlusion.

Recipient of one of the Free Masonry's highest awards, membership in the Knights of the York Cross of Honor, in 1948, Mr. Muir achieved a rare status in Masonry by holding every office of four Masonic organizations:  the blue lodge, the chapter, the council and the commandry.

Mr. Muir came to Meadville in 1927 and became shop superintendent of Mead-Penn Iron Works - now the plant of Sunbeam Equipment Corp. - a post he held until 1942.  The local firm was merged with the PA Engineering Co. of New Castle in 1931 but operations continued to serve in a supervisory capacity with the New Castle firm while still maintaining his home here.  He retired December 1, 1957, at the age of 76 after serving 30 years with the two firms.

Mr. Muir was born in Driftwood, Cameron County, April 12, 1881, and spent much of his early life in Jefferson County.  He was a steel construction worker for a number of years.  He later was employed by the old Standard Tank Car Co., now the General American Transportation CO.  He married the former Bessie Maude Scragg June 14, 1913.  They moved to Meadville from Sharon.  He was a son of Robert D. and Marian Smith Muir and was a member of Stone Methodist Church.

Besides his widow, he is survived by three sons, Dr. Robert D. Muir of Deerfield, IL, Dr. William H. Muir of Northfield, Minn., and James F. Muir at home; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
