George O. Garfield, 95, of Bradshaw Rd., Meadville, died Friday, May 30, 2014 at his residence surrounded by loving family.
He was born August 10, 1918 in Hubbard, Ohio, a son of Otis George and Emma Ott Garfield. He married Frances B. Gross July 2, 1941 on a farm in Hazen, PA and she preceded him in death May 5, 2010.
George was a 1937 graduate of Meadville High School and was a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran of World War II, serving from 1943 to 1946 and attaining the rank of Corporal. He was employed by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Local 556, Meadville. He was the business agent for 17 years of the district council of Local 556 and was a vice president of Building Trades of Western Pennsylvania.
A long-time member of Blooming Valley United Methodist Church and former adult Sunday School teacher, George was a 25-year volunteer with the American Red Cross Blood Mobile, a volunteer with the Red Cross disaster relief and a Red Cross volunteer serving Veterans. He additionally, in 1949, was one of the founders of the Blooming Valley Volunteer Fire Department where he served as the department’s first vice president.
Survivors include two sons, James Garfield and his wife Nancy of Meadville and Brian Garfield and his wife Roxanne of Fairview; two daughters, Karen Joslin and her husband Bradley of Meadville and Susan Schreck and her husband Michael of Meadville; nine grandchildren, Geoffrey Joslin of Pittsburgh, Paul Joslin and his wife Stacey of Saegertown, Jodi Whitehead and her husband David of Texas, Tracey Steiger and her husband Dustin of Meadville; David Garfield and his wife Pamela of Erie, Dena Passerotti and her husband David of Erie, Kevin Garfield of Erie, Amanda Harmon and her husband Drew of Lancaster, and Matthew Schreck of Lancaster; eleven great-grandchildren, Alexandra, Maria, and Eryn Joslin, Madison Whitehead, Rachel, Ryan, Kyle, and Blake Steiger, Daelyn Passerotti, and Gage and Abbigail Harmon; and nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife; he was preceded in death by a sister, Gertrude Strawser; a great-granddaughter, Mary Harmon; and a nephew, Wallace Mosbacher.
Calling hours will be Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville.
The funeral service will be Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Alice McClymonds officiating.
Interment will be in Blooming Valley Cemetery with military honors provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006, Meadville.
