George S. Markiewicz

George S. Markiewicz, 61, of Meadville, died Friday, January 20, 2012 at his residence following a period of declining health.

He was born January 13, 1951 in Port Jervis, NY, a son of the late George and Helene Dorothy O’Malley Markiewicz.  He had been married to Diane Yoset-Sparks and subsequently married Laurie Smith August 18, 1984.

George was a 1969 graduate of Meadville High School and was a Veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the U.S. Navy from 1969 to 1971.  He was employed by Conrail and Norfolk Southern Railroads for 39 years as an electronic scale inspector.

George enjoyed going to the beach, gardening, cooking, music, the Christmas season and decorating for it, and he especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

He was of the Catholic faith.

Survivors, in addition to his loving wife Laurie of 27 years, include five children, Amy Muckinhaupt and her husband Jon of Saegertown, Kristy McBryar and her companion Aaron Ritter of Conneaut Lake, Joseph Markiewicz and his wife Brittany of Meadville, Stephen Markiewicz of Meadville, and Ashley Markiewicz of Meadville; a sister, Helen Carr and her husband David of Meadville; six grandchildren, Lily, Aaliyah, Shelby, Hannah, Andrew, and Laylah; and nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be Monday from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville.

The funeral service will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Philip Torre, Pastor of First Assembly of God, officiating.
