George Stuart DeArment, 85, of Meadville, died Saturday, February 13, 1999 at his winter home in Tequesta, FL following a period of declining health.
He was born November 3, 1913 in Meadville, a son of the late J. Howard and Belle Stuart DeArment. He married Janet A. Owens February 11, 1939. She survives.
He was a graduate of Meadville High School. He attended Allegheny College and was a 1937 graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was an industrialist, joining the family business at Channellock, Inc. in 1937. He worked at Channellock for 44 years, retiring in 1981 as President and Chief Executive Officer. He was a member of Phi Kappa Psi social fraternity at Allegheny College. He was past recipient of the Allegheny College Alumni Award. He was a member of the board of directors of Channellock, the Meadville Recreation Authority, Mellon Bank, North, the former Meadville Telephone Company, and founding board member of WQLN public television station. He received the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member and past president of the Meadville Country Club, member of the United Way of Western Crawford County. He was a former recipient of the Elks Citizen of the year award and the Meadville Area Industrial Commission award.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and former chairman of the trustees.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of 60 years, include a daughter, Mrs. Anne Kleffel of Meadville; a brother, William A. DeArment of Meadville; two grandchildren, Angeline Wykoff and Shawn Naples, both of Meadville; two great-grandchildren, Sarah and Jessica; a niece, Sue DeArment and a nephew, William S. DeArment, both of Meadville. He was preceded in death by two sons, an infant George S. DeArment, Jr. and James H. DeArment.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
