George V. Blackhurst Sr., 81, of Meadville, died at his home Sunday, September 3, 1978, after a brief illness.
A son of Harry and Lula M. Burner Blackhurst, he was born March 28, 1897, in Minneapolis. He married Margaret Linan in 1920. She died in 1976. In 1962 he retired as a welder from Meadville Malleable Division of Dayton Maleable Iron Co. He was a US Navy veteran of World War I serving on the USS Bittern, a mime sweeper which worked in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
Survivors include: two daughters, Mrs. Olin (Mary) Wood of Meadville and Mrs. W. A. (Grace) Ferguson of Freewater-Milton, OR; four sons, Robert C. Gilbert of Saegertown, Fred L. Blackhurst of Franklin, James H. Blackhurst of Meadville and George V. Blackhurst, Jr. of Meadville; five brothers, Henry O. of Charleston, William K. of Charleston; Harold of Willeston, NC, Homer of Lubbock, TX and Francis of Louisa, VA; 17 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, a daughter, three grandchildren, three brothers and two sisters.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Entombment was in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Mausoleum.
