Gladys E. Kimes, 88, of Sandy Lake passed away on Wednesday, October 5, 2022.
She was born on October 24, 1933 in Worth Township, a daughter of Plummer C. and Mabel L. (Carey) Burdette.
Gladys was a graduate of the former Sandy Lake High School, class of 1951. She married William F. “Bill” Kimes on July 5, 1952. He preceded her in death on January 9, 2014.
Mrs. Kimes was employed by the Lakeview School District as a Secretary. Working at both Lakeview Middle and High Schools, she retired in 1993 after 30 years.
As an active member and Elder, Gladys served as the Financial Secretary and Church Treasurer of the Sandy Lake Presbyterian Church; she also taught Sunday School. In earlier years, she was an assistant Girl Scout Leader of the Sandy Lake Girl Scout Troop. Gladys also delivered Meals-On-Wheels with her husband for many years in the Lakeview community.
Gladys’s hobbies included reading, needlework, piecing quilts, and crocheting. She especially loved to knit, having knitted many items for babies and children, as well as afghans for family members and friends. Mrs. Kimes also had an affinity for gardening, as she loved planting flowers and taking care of the lawn. For over 60 years, she played cards with the Girls 500 Card Club. She enjoyed early morning walks every day, dancing, and vacationing in the Outer Banks, North Carolina.
Survivors left to cherish Gladys’s memory are her two sisters; Ruth J. Bruce of New Castle, PA, and Alice L. Boyd of Theodore, AL, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Preceding Gladys in death are her parents, her husband, and her two brothers; Harold C. Burdette and Cecil L. Burdette.
Arrangements are under the care of Rose and Black Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc. of Stoneboro.
Per Gladys’s wishes there will be no services. Interment will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery.
