Gladys Newton Schutz

Gladys Newton Schutz, 93, a former Meadville resident, and a resident of Sarah A. Reed Retirement Center, Erie, died there Wednesday October 26, 2005.

She was born in Sharon, PA, May 31, 1912, a daughter of the late Floyd Henry and Esther Harriet Knoblow Newton.  She moved to Meadville as a young woman where she met and married Harold A. Schutz, Oct. 3, 1934.  They retired to Sebring, Florida where her husband of 52 years passed away on May 15, 1986.

Gladys moved to Erie in 1990 and established her residence at Methodist Towers where she lived until moving to the Sarah A. Reed Retirement Center.  She had been a volunteer for GECAC (Greater Erie Community Action Committee) Foster Grandparent Program, Saint Mary’s East, Battersby Nursing Home, and The Lutheran Home.

She retired in 1975 from the Crawford County Home, and had previously worked for the American Viscose Co., and Saegertown Elementary School.

Survivors include 1 daughter, Joan Schutz Olsen and her husband Glenn of Erie, and their children Karen Olsen of Erie, and Eric Olsen and his wife Marie and great granddaughter Abigail of New Jersey, 2 sons, John Schutz and his wife Jeanette Bisbee of Harborcreek, Gary Schutz and his wife Eileen and their children Gregg and Geoff of Lutz Florida, 1 step-son, Robert Schutz and his wife Gloria of Morgantown, WV, 3 sisters, Inez Woods of New Wilmington, Helen Ott of Mercer, and Isabelle Newton of Boynton Beach, Florida, 2 brothers, Clyde Newton and his wife Ida and James Newton all of Hermitage, and 1 brother-in-law, Paul Schutz of Meadville, and also nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by 1 brother, Floyd Newton, and 5 sisters, Harriett Patton, Esther Butto, Marion Fisher, Iola and Virginia Newton.

There will be no calling hours.

The funeral service will be Saturday Oct. 29, 2005, at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Roselawn Memorial Gardens, 17045 Conneaut Lake Road, Meadville, with the Rev. Gretchen Fornof, pastor of Twelve Apostles Lutheran Church, Saegertown, officiating.
