Guy Emerson Buckingham

March 18, 1899 — April 19, 1987

Dr. Guy Emerson Buckingham, 88, of Meadville, professor emeritus of Allegheny College, died at his home Sunday, April 19, 1987, after an illness of five months.

He was born March 18, 1899, in Deemston, a son of William Hughes and Laura Baker Buckingham.  He married Luna Guesman on June 9, 1920.

Dr. Buckingham earned a bachelor of arts and master of arts degree at Washington and Jefferson College, his PhD at Northwestern University in 1930 and did post-doctoral work as an associate in research at Columbia University in 1938.

He was the author of "Diagnostic and Remedial Teaching in Algebra," Psychology in Transition" and "Personal Adaptability Test."

He industrial experience included 18 years as a consultant with Armco Steel Corp. and 23 years with American Viscose Division.

He taught high school mathematics for six years and was a professor of psychology from 1929 to 1969 at Allegheny College and was chairman of the Department of Psychology at Allegheny for 28 years.

He taught the men's classes at First Presbyterian Church for several years.  He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, was a member of the Mental Health Board for Crawford County and Meadville; a member of the Civil Service Commission for 30 years for the City of Meadville and was a member of the Meadville Round Table for 55 years.  He was also a member of numerous psychological associations.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Mervin (Bud) Baker of Charleston, WV; a daughter, Mrs. John (Betty) Pond of Littleton, CO; three sisters, Mrs. Louis (Mary) Crawford of Fredericktown, Evelyn Hartman of Jacksonville, FL and Miss Mildred Buckingham of Albuquerque, NM; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
