Harley J. Morris, 89, of Meadville, died Thursday, February 12, 1987, at Wesbury United Methodist Community following a brief illness.
He was born near Elizabeth, WV, May 9, 1897, a son of Charles and Winona Barnes Morris. He married Mabel M. Slocan on November 23, 1921. She preceded him in death December 25, 1980.
Mr. Morris served in the US Army during World War I from 1917 to 1918.
He was a 1921 gradute of Allegheny College, receiving his master of science degree then in 1923. He was a graduate student at Harvard from 1926 to 1927.
Mr. Morris worked as instructor and head of the science department at South Brownsville High School from 1921 to 1922, as chemist for the Monongahela Iron and Steel Company at Paden City, WV from 1922 to 1926.
He worked as an instructor in chemistry at Allegheny College from 1923 to 1926, assistant professor of chemistry from 1927 to 1935, and acting head of the chemistry department from 1935 to 1936.
Mr. Morris then worked as a research chemist from American Viscose Co. from 1936-1940, was assistant plant chemist from 1940 to 1943, chief plant chemist from 1943 to 1958 and worked as technical advisor to the plant manager from 1958 to June 1, 1962. He also worked as Meadville City Bacteriologist and in many communities in western PA.
He was a member of many professional organizations and associations.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Ernest (Marjorie) Newton, Jr. of Bellmore, Long Island, NY, Mrs. Bernard (Doris) Swavey of Erie and Mrs. Ronald (Joan) Stallard of Meadville; a son, Richard Morris of Forestville, NY; a sister, Mrs. Sheldon (Ethel) Braymer of Meadville; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry Morris and Paul Morris.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
