Harold J. (Pete) Murkens, 75, of Meadville, died Saturday, May 2, 1998, at Crawford County Care Center, Saegertown, after a period of declining health. He was born in Cranesville, June 26, 1922, a son of George H. and Stella Worden Murkens, and was raised by his grandparents, John and Olie Worden. He married Viola M. Curtis February 21, 1942. She survives. He retired in 1985 from Avtex, Inc. in the temperature control department after 46 years of service. He was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the US Navy in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of American Legion Post 111, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006, Crawford Masonic Lodge 234, Scottish Rite Bodies of Erie, Zem Zem Shrine Temple of Erie, Crawford County Shrine Club and Kismet Grotto. He was a life member of the Meadville Club, West Mead No. 1 Volunteer Fire Department and Springboro Volunteer Fire Department. Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Mrs. Calvin (Donita) Chace of Rockledge, FL; two sons, David (Diane) Murkens of Meadville and Darrell (Jana) Murkens of Hendersonville, NC; six grandchildren, Wendy Bailey, David Murkens Jr., Heather Barnhart, Kevin Kramer, Cassandra Chace and Andrew Murkens; seven great-grandchildren; and a half-sister, Veryl Jeanne Vibbard of Conneaut, OH.
