Harrington A. Smith, 93, formerly of Ridge Dr., Meadville and Cordia Commons, Meadville, died Monday, February 10, 2003 at the Crawford County Care Center.
He was born in Townville, December 9, 1909, a son of the late Don Estivan and Susan Ladds Smith. He married Catherine Isobel Cooke February 3, 1947 and she preceded him in death January 19, 1997.
He was a 1931 graduate of Allegheny College with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and subsequently joined the Naval Reserves and retired as a Lieutenant Commander in 1969. He retired in 1971 from the American Viscose Co. as head of the spinning department, following 38 years of service. He was a charter member of the Northwest PA Chapter of the Retired Officer’s Association. He loved reading and was an avid outdoorsman.
He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of the Redeemer, Meadville.
Survivors include 2 daughters, Seona Brown and her husband Murice of Waldorf, MD and Holly Unice and her husband Kenneth of Meadville; 5 grandchildren, Erin Brown, Kenneth M. Unice, Kari Unice, Sean Unice, and Kyle Unice; and a sister, Donna Isabell Smith of Saegertown. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Michael Ian Smith; 3 brothers, William Ladds Smith, Huber Langstroth Smith, and Henry Thoreau Smith; and a sister, Virginia Smith Happe.
Calling hours will be Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville.
A funeral service will be Friday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Mary Kathryn Crom, Pastor of United Presbyterian Church of the Redeemer officiating.
Burial will be in Kingsley Cemetery, Townville.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Meadville Public Library, 848 N. Main St., Meadville, PA 16335 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
