Harry A. (Hez) Nichols, 54, sheriff of Crawford county during the period from 1934 to 1938, died at his home on Ellis Hill, east of the city. In ill health for some time, his condition became serious only a few days ago.
Born in Meadville, the son of Warren E. and Miranda Ann Nichols, he spent his entire lifetime in this city. He became deputy under Sheriff, John L. Connell in 1930, and in 1933 was elected to the office of sheriff on the Republican ticket, taking over his duties the first Monday of 1934 and capably serving the county during his four year tenure.
Mr. Nichols enjoyed a wide acquaintanceship throughout Crawford County and NW PA. Of a cordial nature, he was a friend of everyone who knew him.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and of several fraternal organizations of the city.
Mr. Nichols is survived by his widow and two sons, Harry Arthur, Jr. and Robert Barker Nichols, at home; three brothers, Sibley of Brooklyn, NY and Robert and Warren E. of Meadville; and two sisters, Mrs. Bertha E. Green of Washington DC and Mrs. Florence Edmonds of Meadville.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
