Harry Arthur Nichols, Jr.

Succumbing to a war-incurred disease, Harry Arthur Nichols, Jr., 29, son of Mrs. H. A. Nichols of Meadville and the late Mr. Hez Nichols, former county sheriff, died Sunday night at the US Naval Hospital in Philadelphia.

Only a few weeks ago, Mr. Nichols had begun the study of law, a long-standing ambition.  He was one of 60 students from 300 examined, successful in being accepted this fall by the law school of the Univesity of Pennsylvania.  He became ill shortly after he had begun the fall term.

Mr. Nichols was a graduate of Meadville High School, and of Allegheny College in the 1940 class.  He worked for Talon, Inc., for a time, leaving for service in the United State Navy in February of 1941.

Attaining the rank of captain, he was placed in charge of German prisoners at a camp in Missouri and later was in charge of a detachment of these prisoners at Seattle, WA, then in Hawaii.  He became ill during this period of service, and in January of 1946, he was flown back to San Francisco, CA.  He was hospitalized there, then at Crile Veterans Administration Hospital, Cleveland, OH and Walter Reed Hospital in Washington DC, being discharged from the latter institution in July of 1946.  After recuperating, he was engaged for some time in the office of a construction company at the American Viscose Corp. plant here, leaving to take up his law studies in Philadelphia.

Mr. Nichols is survived by his mother, and a brother, Robert B. of Meadville.  He was a member of Charles N. Stafford Post, American Legion.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
