Hattie M. Oakes

May 17, 1879 — April 15, 1960

Mrs. Hattie M. Oakes, 80, of Mountainhome, Monroe County, where she had lived for 40 years, died at her home Friday, April 15, 1960, after a long illness.

She had lived in this area prior to moving to Mountianhome.

She was born at Mt. Hope May 17, 1879, a daughter of Edward and Clarinda Daniels Stewart.  She married Norman D. Oakes, who died in December of 1939.

Mrs. Oakes was a member of the Canadensis Methodist Church and of the sewing circle of the church.  She taught a class in the Church School and served as church organist.  She was a graduate of Edinboro State College and taught in the Barrett Township schools, Monroe County.

Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Theodore (Elsie) Vernoy of Canadensis, Mrs. Dorothy Thomas of Knoxville, Mrs. Vera Rand of Fort Lauderdale, FL and Miss Audrey Oakes at home; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
