Helen B. Thornton, 91, of Meadville, died Tuesday, February 10, 1998 at Meadville Medical Center following a period of declining health.
She was born January 24, 1907 in Meadville, a daughter of the late George H. and Mary Gibson Brock. She married Homer A. Thornton July 6, 1938. He preceded her in death on July 1, 1992.
Mrs. Thornton was a graduate of Meadville High School and a 1927 graduate of Allegheny College with a Bachelors of Arts in French. She was a member of the college's Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. She worked full-time for several years as a teacher in the Meadville public schools until 1938. She subsequently became a partner in 1938 with her husband in the operation of Thornton Nurseries, East Side, Conneaut Lake. She taught as a substitute teacher during this time as well. She was a member of Colonel Crawford Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution; Meadville Garden Club; Meadville Women's Club; Crawford County Historical Society; Alpha Chi Omega Alumni Club of Meadville; Philo-Mathesian Literary club; former member of Meadville Noontime Kiwanis Ladies and former board member and past president of Meadville Associated Charities.
She was a life-long member of First Presbyterian Church and former choir member.
Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Clair (Louise) Van Horn of Jacksonville, FL and also nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Dr. Mary B. Duffy.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
