Helen L. Miles, 91, of Meadville, died Thursday, February 15, 2001 at Wesbury United Methodist Community following a period of declining health.
She was born in Meadville, April 12, 1909, the daughter of Edward D. and Bertha Christian Miles.
She attended Meadville Public Schools and graduated from Allegheny College in 1930. She did graduate work at the School of Social Work, Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh and the National Catholic School for Social Services in Washington, DC.
She served as county supervisor for the Crawford County Department of Public Assistance before going with the American Red Cross in 1943, where much of her work was psychiatric social work. She worked in the Southeastern US District of the Red Cross. She served in both the Army and Navy Hospital as executive of the hospitals Red Cross Unit and supervisor of the Navy civil service social workers.
She returned to Meadville in 1953 to become Administrative Director of the Crawford County Mental Health Center, where she worked until her retirement in 1974.
She was a member of Stone United Methodist Church, a member of the Golden Crown Chapter, Order of Eastern Star and a charter member of the Zonta Club of Meadville. She also was a member of the National Assn. of Social Workers and served on the Crawford County Community Council.
Survivors, include a sister, Eleanor M. Joiner of Baltimore, MD and two nephews, Richard A. Boring of Oakwood, GA and John A. Boring of Hunt Valley, MD.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia A. Kirkpatrick.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
