Hendrik (Hank) DeKruif, MD, 96, of Meadville, died peacefully surrounded by family and friends Friday, January 24, 2014 at the Meadville Medical Center.
He was born in Ann Arbor, MI August 2, 1917 a son of Paul and Mary Fisher DeKruif. He married Cecille King and subsequently married Dagmar Carter North April 2, 1972 and she preceded him in death September 14, 2009.
He was a 1934 graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy, a 1938 graduate of Harvard University, a 1942 graduate of Yale University School of Medicine, served his residency in Internal Medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, NY in 1943, then was a veteran of World War II serving in the US Army Medical Corps from 1944-1946. Following the war he was an instructor and assistant professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School from 1947-1950, then a practicing physician in Fergus Falls, MN and consultant to the Fergus Falls State Hospital from 1950-1958. He then moved to Meadville and was in private practice in internal medicine until his retirement in 1984. He continued as an EKG consultant, director of the Tuberculosis Clinic and as physician in sports medicine for Meadville Senior and Junior High Schools.
He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and former Vestryman and choir member. He was a member of the Crawford County and Pennsylvania Medical Societies, the American Medical Association, Round Table and the Meadville Country Club. He was an avid golfer and tennis player with a rapier backhand.
He is survived by three daughters, Susan DeKruif Joyce and her husband Allen of Atlanta, GA, Mary DeKruif of Denver, CO and Katherine DeKruif Walsh and her husband David, of Brussels, Belgium and three grandchildren, Edward Hendrik Fulton, Thomas Alan Joyce and Meghan DeKruif Joyce.
In addition to his wives and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, David DeKruif, MD.
The memorial service will be Saturday, August 16, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 870 Diamond Park, Meadville.
Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
