Herbert C. Gilmore, 74, of Meadville, formerly of Slingerlands, NY and State College, died Thursday, April 11, 1996 at Meadville Medical Center following a sudden illness.
He was born July 2, 1921 at Kennerdell, Venango County, a son of the late Clarence C. and Minnie (Osborne) Gilmore. He married Clara Stankowich on September 5, 1953. She survives.
Mr. Gilmore earned a BS degree from Penn State University in 1941 and MS degree from the University of Massachusetts in 1962. He was appointed to the Penn State Cooperative Extension Service in 1945 as Assistant County Agent in Clarion and Venango Counties. He transferred to the Extension dairy science faculty in 1946 where he was a professor for 35 years until his retirement November 1, 1980. He was in charge of the PA Dairy Herd Improvement Assn. program from 1958 until his retirement. In 1966, he was recipient of the PA Dairyman's Assn. Extension Award and in 1979 won the Gamma Sigma Delta Extension Award. In 1995, the PA Dairy Herd Improvement Assn. created the Herbert C. Gilmore Award which is presented each year to an outstanding individual in the field of milk testing. He was a former member and usher of St. Paul's United Methodist Church of State College.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three daughters, Ina M. Gilmore of Slingerlands, NY, Ann L. White of Norcross, GA and Alice R. Young of Haddonfield, NJ; three sisters, Ina Nash and Icel Dotterer, both of Meadville and Geraldine Woods, of Grove City; one brother, Calvin Gilmore of Rocky Grove; and three grandsons.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Maude Dillon and Vera Gilmore and five brothers, Kenneth, Robert, Merle, Clyde and Andrew Gilmore.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
