Hershel H. Rhodes

February 9, 1912 — January 1, 1753

Hershel H. (Red) Rhodes, 35, of Meadville, athletic director for Keystone Ordnance Work employees, operator of the Dreamland Ballroom at Conneaut Lake and Albion bakery owner, died at City Hospital Sunday from an illness growing out of shoulder injuries he sustained in World War II combat.

Holder of the bronze star and several other decorations for war service, Rhodes was injuried in the Battle of the Bulge during a period of long army service in the European theater.  He had been in ill health for several months as result of the injury and shortly before he was admitted to City Hospital here, he was a patient at Crile General Hospital in Cleveland.

Prior to entering service, Rhodes headed up the K.O.W. athletic program and operated a service station here.  During the summer of 1946, he operated the Conneaut Lake Park Ballroom.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.  He sold his bakery at Albion recently when he entered the hospital at Cleveland.

Surviving are his widow, Maxine; a daughter, Sally; his mother and three brothers.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Riverview Cemetery.
