Horace J. (Hank) Weymer, 80, of 860 Dogwood Drive, Meadville died at home Thursday, January 15, 2004. He was born in Brooklyn, NY, July 26, 1923, the fourth son of Harry W. and Johanna Noteboom Weymer. He married Peggy McKnight June 14, 1947 and she survives. He was a 1941 graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School, Brooklyn, NY, and a graduate of Penn State University where he received his BS and MS in Metallurgy in 1947 and 1948. He was a member of Nittany Co-op, Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity and Alpha Phi Omega national service fraternity. He was a veteran of World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps serving as a navigator in the 398th Bombardment Group of the 8th Air Force stationed at Nuthampstead, England. He flew on 32 combat missions to Germany and was awarded the Air Medal with 4 oak leaf clusters, European campaign ribbon with battle stars for central Europe, Rhineland and Ardennes as well as the Presidential Unit citation. He belonged to the American Legion and was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He started working for American Brake Shoe Company, subsequently ABEX Corp., in 1948 at the Mahwah, NJ Research Center where he worked as Metallurgist and Foundry Superintendent. He transferred to the Meadville Plant in 1956 as chief Metallurgist and subsequently became Foundry Superintendent and Technical Director. He retired in 1985 after 37 years of service. His business and civic activities included a longtime affiliation with Boy Scouts, having been an Eagle scout as a boy, then serving as Scoutmaster, Troop committee member, Crawford District Commissioner and Chairman. He also was a board member and coach of Meadville Area Boys Baseball, YMCA board member and parent volunteer, United Way planning committee and Fund Drive Corporate Division chairman, Chamber of Commerce business Education days, Meadville Medical Center Board of Corporators, Crawford County Historical Society director, a tutor for the Crawford County READ program and also was a reader at First District School. He was a member of Crawford Masonic Lodge #234, Scottish Rite bodies of New Castle, Zem Zem Shrine Temple of Erie, Crawford County Shrine Club, Meadville Country Club director, Meadville Rotary Club, and a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary, a Life member of the American Society for Metals and American Foundrymans Society. He was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church having served as a Sunday school teacher, Deacon, Elder, and Trustee. Survivors in addition to his wife of 56 years, include one daughter Christine and her husband Dr. Jack Bailey and their children, Sarah, Leslie, and John Bailey all of Meadville; three sons, John Weymer and his wife Marilyn and their children, Katie, and Craig Weymer all of McKinney, TX; Dr. Richard Weymer, and his wife Beth and their children, Bradley, Hilary, and Bethany Weymer all of Strasburg, PA, and David Weymer and his wife Carol and their children, Drew, Erin and Jack Weymer all of Ellicott City, MD, a niece and her children, a nephew, and a sister in law. A daughter, Elizabeth Margaret Weymer, and three brothers, Harry, Walter, and John Weymer preceded him in death. A memorial service will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 890 Liberty Street, Meadville, with the Rev. Dr. Brian Jensen, Pastor, officiating. An hour of visitation will precede the service from 2-3 p.m., and a reception will follow the service in fellowship hall of the church. Burial with military honors by Huidekoper VFW Post #2006 will be in Greendale Cemetery. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 890 Liberty Street, Wesbury United Methodist Community, 31 N. Park Avenue, Hospice of Crawford County, 448 Pine Street all of Meadville, PA 16335 or a charity of the donors choice. The arrangements are under the direction of Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Inc., 581 Chestnut Street, Meadville, PA 16335.
