Hugh Cutshall

February 25, 1883 — January 1, 1753

Hugh Cutshall died Sunday night at Meadville City Hospital.

The former Crawford County commissioner succumbed four hours after he suffered a stroke of apoplexy at his home.  He was 54 years old.

Mr. Cutshall was born February 25, 1883, in Randolph Township.  He operated a farm in that township until 1917 when he relocated to Meadville where he was employed for two years at the Bronze Metal - now National Bearing Metals Corp. - plant.

He then purchased a grocery store at the corner of Liberty and North streets, conducting the business successfully for 12 years.  In August of 1930, he was appointed by Judge O. Clare Kent to fill the unexpired term of his brother, County Commissioner Harley B. Cutshall, who died with one year and five months still to serve.

The new commissioner, a Democrat, then entered the race for a full term as county commissioner was successful and served the term comprising the years 1932, 1933, 1934 and 1935.

His next employment was with the Pennsylvania highways department, with which he was connected for about a year in charge of a traffic survey in this section of the state.

Following a period of semi-retirement, he was engaged only about a month ago to fill a position at the local office of the Pennsylvania state employment service.

Mr. Cutshall was a member of Crawford Lodge of the IOOF.  A quiet, unassuming man, he had a wide acquaintance in fraternal and civic circles through this section.

Surviving besides the widow are a daughter, Mrs. Everett Waterhouse and one grandchild, Hugh Howard Waterhouse, both of Meadville.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Blooming Valley Cemetery.
