Hugh Dale Mumford

Hugh (Dale) Mumford, 93, a long-time resident of Guys Mills, passed away Monday, January 9, 2012 at his daughter’s residence in Plainsboro, NJ.

He was born June 15, 1918 in Cochranton, a son of James and Goldie Maloney Mumford.  He was raised in Cochranton and Meadville and graduated from Meadville High School.

Mr. Mumford was a 1948 graduate of Penn State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture.  He was a veteran of World War II serving as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army in the European Theater of operations.  He served as a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 24 years, retiring in 1975.  He also farmed in Richmond Township for many years.  A member of New Richmond United Methodist Church, Dale was a former 35 year board member of the Northwestern Rural Electric Cooperative, former school board member of Richmond Township-Townville School Board and former member of the American Quarter Horse Association.  He most recently raised Haflinger horses.

Mr. Mumford is survived by his wife of 64 years – Cleola Carpenter Mumford.  In addition, he is survived by four children – Hugh J. Mumford and his wife Judy of Guys Mills, Linda A. Mumford and her husband John of Plainsboro, NJ, Mark C. Mumford of Lincoln, VT and David B. Mumford and his wife Madalena of Townville; a sister, Jean Spencer of New Paltz, NY; four grandchildren, Miranda, Jeremy and Matthew Mumford and Cammie Sands; two great grandchildren, Cy William Van Cise and Scout Livia Van Cise and nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Dean and Perry Mumford and two sisters, Marian Brown and Gladys Sears.

There will be no calling hours.

Friends will be received at the funeral and committal service Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Inc., 581 Chestnut Street, Meadville with the Rev. Jeff Bobin, Pastor of New Richmond United Methodist Church, officiating.

Interment will be in Kingsley Cemetery, Townville.
