Hugh Edward Herron Ii

May 6, 1943 — January 11, 2023

Hugh Edward Herron II (1943-2023) Mercer, PA, is now bowing before his Lord humbled and thanking Him for the many blessings in his 79 years.  His larger-than-life persona, trademark jokes and fanatical spirit will NEVER be forgotten by those that knew him.

He was born to Hugh E. Herron (Big Edd) and Erna “Babe” Geiger Herron on May 6, 1943, in Sandy Lake.   Scooter, as he was affectionately known by his family and friends, was a true Taurus with head strong stubbornness, tenacity, lack of patience, love of cars and motorcycles and always filled the room with laughter.

Scooter graduated from Lakeview High School in 1961.  While he wasn’t a sports star like his younger brother, he was a GEAR HEAD, thespian, a very good student and obtained his pilot license, before his driver’s license.

He attended Edinboro College, graduating with English and Library Science degrees, where he was President of Alpha Phi Omega fraternity. He later received his master’s degree in education from Penn State University.  He was an educator at the Hermitage school district working with Jr High students for 35 years, which he said guaranteed him a place in heaven.

In addition, he worked throughout life as a jack-of-all trades in numerous jobs: truck driving, dynamite crew, tuck-pointing, road construction, carpentry, mechanic, auto body repair and painting, landscaping for a multitude of companies, and delivering coal before school at the age of 15.  He also helped his parents run the Herron’s Inn Tavern in Jackson Center, the local watering hole for Grove City college students.  He was the bouncer, bartender, and mastered his pool playing skills.

The only thing that trumped his love of all things 2, 3 or 4 wheeled was the love of this life, Susan McCurdy Herron, with whom he eloped on May 11, 1968, in Ripley “Believe it or Not”, NY.

Scooter was renowned for his love of cheap beer, good times, and “not so fine” wine and whiskey.  His Scooterisms include: “If you’re gonna be dumb, you gotta be tough”, “Duct tape will fix anything”, “Hey Sue, I’m bleeding…again”, and “Well, that didn’t work”.

The best night of his life was at a Kid Rock concert in Pittsburgh.  He loved country, bluegrass, classic rock, and ZZ TOP.   He once surprised his family with a trip to Cleveland in 1986 to see ZZ TOP where he almost got his family stabbed or shanked in the bathroom.

He hated liars, cheats, animal cruelty, and people sitting on the hood of a car. He was brutally honest and an extrovert to the fullest, characteristics he passed on his children.  He had a knack of telling jokes unlike any other, specializing in the groaner department.

Scooter loved people and would give anyone the shirt off his back to help in any way he could.  He always supported his children, even if it meant hours of dance recitals, band and choir concerts and hours spent in the garage with his son rebuilding a 1964 Chevy Impala.   He also built the family home and then rebuilt it after the tornado of 1985.  He was a member of the NRA and a true patriot who loved his country.

He had a great many animal loves throughout his life.  Dobermans Keeper, Rustin, Torque, and pups Honey Boy and Chewy.  He met his match though with his Australian cattle dog, Blue Ruppy Puppy.  He also loved his feline friends Bob Cat, Stoobie, Hailwood, Saki, Norton, and Vinny.  He was always and ever an animal lover and will enjoy spending time in heaven with them.

Scooter loved his family immensely.  In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Nichole (Michael) Herron Patrina and Kyle (Stephanie) Herron, and his granddaughters, Josilyn and Aubrey Herron, who called him “Paps”.  He was enormously proud of them and their many accomplishments.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 infant brothers and his brother, Rodney (Nub) Herron who passed away in September 2022.

In lieu of flowers, Scooter would be most proud to have donations made in his honor to the Grove City Area Pet Rescue to support his feline friends at PO Box 292, Grove City, PA 16127 or Charleston Methodist Church 1169 Greenfield Road, Hermitage, PA 16148.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 15th starting at 1 p.m. at the Fredonia Presbyterian Church 24 Water Street, Fredonia, PA 16124.  Services will begin at 2 p.m. with a fellowship meal to follow to celebrate Scooter and share stories of his wonderful life.
