Irving C. (Chet) Spiers, Jr., 88, of Meadville, died Sunday July 13, 2008, at Wesbury United Methodist Community.
Born in Waterbury, CT August 29, 1919, he was the son of Irving C., Sr., and Mary Reyher Spiers. He married Edith Snowden Phelan, also of Waterbury, Oct. 24, 1941, and she survives.
He was a 1941 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business, and moved to Meadville to take an accounting position wit Talon. He retired from, Talon in 1976 as Director of Personnel after 35 years of service.
Chet had a lifelong interest in scouting as an Eagle Scout and said his “perfect summer” was attending the World Scout Jamboree in Amsterdam, Netherlands in 1937, and then spending the rest of the summer as a 17 year old traveling throughout Europe.
He enjoyed sports, traveling, reading, and bird watching. During his 60 years as a member of the First Presbyterian Church he served terms as Elder and Trustee. He spent a term as president of the Meadville Area Chamber of Commerce as well as 40 years on the board of Meadville Housing Corp., and many years on the Meadville Advisory Board of Northwest PA Bank and Trust. He spent several years as a volunteer Redcoat at Meadville Medical Center. He had a smile for everyone and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors in addition to his wife, Edith, of 66 years, include 2 daughters, Connie Smith of Albuquerque, NM, and Nancy Baldwin of Meadville, a granddaughter, Michele Wessel and her husband Matt of Cincinnati, OH, and 2 step great grandchildren, Logan and Grant Wessel.
There are no calling hours.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday July 16, 2008, at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of First Presbyterian Church, 890 Liberty Street, Meadville with Rev. Travis Webster, Associate Pastor, officiating.
Burial will be in Greendale Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to First Presbyterian Church, 890 Liberty St., Meadville, PA 16335, the Meadville Medical Center, 751 Liberty St. Meadville, PA 16335 or a charity of the donor’s choice.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Inc., 581 Chestnut Street, Meadville.
