J. Hugh Shilling

June 6, 1911 — August 2, 1998

J. Hugh Shilling, 87, a resident of Wesbury United Methodist Community since June 1998 and formerly of Circle West Woodland Trailer Park, Meadville, died Sunday August 2, 1998 at his residence following a period of declining health.

He was born June 6, 1911 in Cochranton, a son of the late John Hubert and Anna Elizabeth Klipple Shilling.  She married Ruth A. Stainbrook January 1, 1929.  She survives.

Mr. Shilling was owner and operator of J. Hugh Shilling Construction Co., retiring in 1973.  He previously worked as a carpenter in association with his brother T. C. Shilling.  He was a member of Masonic Lodge #408, Meadville Elks Lodge #219 and a 50 year member of the carpenters local #556.  He was an avid Cleveland Indians fan and also enjoyed golfing and fishing.

He was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ and a former church elder and deacon.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of 69 years, include four sons, Richard Shilling (Mary) of Crossville, TN, John Shilling (Marilyn) of Meadville, Dan Shilling (Sharon) of Meadville and Ron Shilling (Jeanie) of Charlotte, NC; eleven grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, four brothers and four sisters.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Cochranton Cemetery.
