J. Walter Virtue, 88, of Springs Care Center, Cambridge Springs, formerly of Saegertown, died at Meadville Medical Center, Monday, February 12, 1990, following a short illness.
He was born in Guys Mills, March 24, 1901, a son of Ernest E. and Austa Oakes Virtue. He married Evelyn Richardson April 28, 1930. She preceded him in death September 29, 1969. He subsequently married Alice Childs April 10, 1971. She survives.
He had retired from his position as bookkeeper with American Brake Shoe (ABEX).
He was a member of the Pleasantview Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. He was a member of the National Guard Band Section Service Co. from October of 1927 to October of 1936. He was a former member and officer of Grace United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Wesbury United Methodist Community Board.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Mrs. Earl (Janet) Smith of Guys Mills; a son, James N. Virtue of Hallstead; three step-daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Cecile) Stewart of Fostoria, OH, Mrs. Dwight (Lucile) Stallard of Conneaut Lake and Mrs. Fred (Marilyn) Mears of Meadville; a step-son, Norman Childs of Crossville, IL; a sister, Mrs. Melvin (Eleanor) Carman of Venango; a brother, Ivan Virtue of Guys Mills; six grandchildren; eleven step-grandchildren; and eighteen step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Leda Minnhinick.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
