James Anthony Janacone, 85, of Towson, MD and formerly of New Castle, PA, died Saturday, March 28, 2015 at St. Joseph Medical Center, Towson, MD. He was born December 13, 1929 in New Castle, the son of Benjamin and Maria Ferrazano Janacone. He married Sandra Allen of Stoneboro in 1977 and she survives.
He graduated from New Castle High School where he excelled in baseball and basketball. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1951-1953 as a Corporal in Special Services. After his discharge from the Marines, he graduated from Youngstown State University and Westminster College with a Masters Degree in Education. James was an educator in the New Castle School District for 42 years, retiring in 1994. He was a member of the American Federation of Teachers and a member of St. Vitus Church in New Castle. He enjoyed gardening, sports and was an avid Notre Dame Football fan.
Survivors, in addition to his wife Sandra of Towson, MD, include: three daughters, Alexa Arfaoui (Nor) of Richmond, VA, Gina Hardisky (Benjamin) of Abingdon, MD and Mary Janacone of Towson, MD; two grandchildren, Norah and Ethan Hardisky; two brothers, Richard Janacone of New Castle and John Janacone of Girard, OH and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Angelo, Sam and Benjamin Janacone and a sister, Margaret Janacone.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at St. Vitus Roman Catholic Church, 910 S. Mercer St., New Castle.
Interment will be private at Oak Hill Cemetery, Sandy Lake Twp., Mercer Co.
The family suggests memorials be made to St. Vitus Church 910 S. Mercer St., New Castle, PA 16101.
