James Charles Hogan

James Charles Hogan of Meadville, PA passed away peacefully at Rolling Fields Nursing Home on October 1, 2022.

Jim was born in Hydro, OK on January 10, 1936.  He remembered the harsh effects of the Dust Bowl on his parents, Charles and Ruby Hogan.  His spouse, Aurelia Hogan, passed away on February 22, 2022.

In 1954, Jim graduated from Clinton High School and served as President of the Oklahoma Future Farmers of America in 1955-56, winning National Championships in Hereford and Hog Judging.  Scholarship monies paid for 2 years of attending Oklahoma A&M, from 1954-56.  Jim then transferred to the University of Oklahoma graduating in 1958 with a B.A. in Arts and Letters, majoring in Greek and Latin (Classics).

Jim obtained a master’s degree in 1961 and a PhD in 1966 from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY.  Undergraduate and graduate recognitions included: Highest Honors, Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa, Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, Southern Teaching Fellow, in addition to being a Rhodes Scholar Finalist.  From 1961 to 1969, Jim served as an instructor and professor at the following institutions: Converse College, Spartansburg, SC; Washington University, St. Louis, MO; and University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK.

In 1969, Jim accepted a position as the Frank T. McClure Professor of Classics at Allegheny College where he served until 1999.  Jim authored countless poems, articles, and three books: A Guide to the Iliad, A Commentary on the Complete Greek Tragedies of Aeschylus, and A Commentary on the Plays of Sophocles.

Jim will be remembered for his love of his wife Aurelia, music, poetry, golf, stinky cheese, Paris, and wild English gardens; deep intelligence, sarcasm, gin, and his LAUGH.  As a former student once said, “It was as if Zeus himself was laughing.”

A special thank you goes to Janet Maynard, a loyal caregiver for many years.  Also, Peg and Ross Bell, and Mike Hertzler, supportive neighbors.  Survivors include his stepson, Max Holt and daughter-in-law Sarah Holt; daughters and sons-in-law, Ada Hogan Porter and Geoff Porter; Ashley Hunt and Mike Hunt; Kate Flores and Pat Flores.  Grandchildren include Charlie and McAlester Holt; James Maccabee and Ezra Hogan Porter; Mason Hunt; and Alex and Anne Flores.

A private memorial for Jim and Aurelia will be planned at a later date.
