James E. Wettach, 89, formerly of Meadville and a current resident of Wesbury United Methodist Community since May 15, 1996, died there, Monday, June 16, 1997 following a period of declining health.
He was born February 2, 1908 in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Edward and Amelia Zoller Wettach. He married Geraldine L. Devore, June 2, 1932. She preceded him in death January 29, 1996.
Mr. Wettach was a graduate of Bellefonte Academy, Bellefonte, PA. He attended Allegheny College where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. He graduated form Miami University, Coral Gables, FL. He built, and for 37 years owned Hailwood Golf Course. He also worked for 37 years at the C. C. Devore Lumber Co. He was a member of the Meadville Country Club, Iroquois Club, and Meadville Elks Lodge #219. He loved his family, enjoyed playing golf, and playing the trumpet. He played the trumpet with the band "Hailwood Hot Shots" for many years. He was a kind and gentle man with a wonderful, subtle sense of humor.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Thomas (Carol) Beers of Meadville; one granddaughter; three grandsons and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Edward and two sisters, Lillian and Henrietta.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
